Bandai wins legal battle against Hongli

Japan-toy manufacturing company Bandai recently won a legal suit Chinese toy maker Hongli for trademark infringement on toys that are clearly resembled Mobile Suit Gundam and BB Senshi Sangokuden plastic model designs.

Bandai filed this legal suit last November, 2009 and led Hongli to issue a public apology through an ad. The China court ordered Hongli to pay damages amounting to 10 million yen or USD130,000.

Hongli applied for an appeal from the Beijing High Court on December 17, 2010 but favored Bandai the following year. Bandai is keeping a watchful eye on Hongli to ensure that the order is being carried out.

Bandai continues to be vigilant in looking on their franchise. This year, Bandai sued two Japanese model makers for modifying SIC Kamen Rider figures and selling them at a hefty price on eBay. In China, the Chengdu Guosetianxiang Park was criticized for housing a 15 meter tall robot statue clearly resembling the first Gundam mobile suit.  The park later on modified the statue.
