PETA to Mario Fans: Relax (News Update)

Animal rights advocate group, PETA recently issues a statement to Mario fans to relax after netizens were enraged from accusing the game icon for animal cruelty.

According to Shakira Croce, PETA's media coordinator, "Mario fans: Relax! PETA's game was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur. We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins. You can help them by never buying real fur."

Recently PETA released a flash game to claim Mario kills a tanooki (japanese racoon dog) to use its fur to save the princess.

Bad publicity.

Gamers have pointed out that the Peta is "late in the game" in using Mario for their causes. The Tanooki suit has been around since 1988 through the release of Super Mario Bros. 3. There have been other animal suits that Mario have worn as a power up such as a turtle, a frog, penguin and alike.

Despite its ill conceived publicity, PETA had more than 250,000 hits on its first day and people have actually played the game the first 36 hours.
