In the light of having Super Robot Chogokins (SRCs) to my current collection, I stumbled upon an oldie - in fact the first Super Sentai Robo. I was adamant at first, but a classic is a classic and I cannot miss this one. It was on sale via ebay so I clicked and brought it home. Safely wrapped in plastic, I peeled the aging scotch tape that was holding the plastic together and to my surprise, everything was crispy as a pork knuckle dish.
This is my review of Battle Fever J and the Super Sentai's first mecha - the Battle Fever Robo (Soul of Chogokin version). The box art looks as any old SOC figure with Battle Japan and the robot on the cover. On the back, first impression was - OMG talk about weaponizing a mecha. It brings back to old Super Sentai robos (from 70s to 80s) when more gadgets means more firepower. But what is inside will amaze you. He has tons of heavy die-cast weapons namely:
1. Denkoken with the Sheath (Battle Fever Robo's Itachi Sword)
2. Sword Fever - (looks like two kunai knives)
3. Fever Axe (get ready to some chopping)
4. Stick Attacker (a trident of power)
5. Attack Lancer (any knight would need this)
6. Cane Knocker (it is a cane with a ring)
7. Battle Shield (the "BF" looks cheesy but the metallic part makes it a classic)
8. Knuckle Punchers (two knuckle braces with sharp spikes)
The extra hands are great, but feels slippery and feels like these melt in a certain temperature. So I try to keep these in a safe area of my geek palacio (aka my room).
Moreover, he has a stand that holds the figure perfectly allowing the illusion of having two magnets at the bottom. I checked so there is none. This stand configuration reminds me of how old super sentai robos are being held at their bases, to the younger generation you may refer to Gobusters. Moreover, it holds every single weapon there is, heck I can even use my other SRC weapons and stack it all here.
Battle Fever Robo's diecast design sort of fails on its joints. While the extremities are metal, the joints are in plastic. There are occasions wherein the upper torso tilts down since it can't carry most of the upper body weight. Secondly the crotch guard (I don't know how to call it, anyways), hinders the flexibility of the upper thigh areas resulting to the hip bumping on metal even there is a hinge on the plate. The rest of the articulation points are awesome.
The first Battle Fever Robo toy was lame, I've seen it and looks like a sofubi with chains. It has less articulation and looks like a glorified statuette. SOC's version however takes the word die-cast to another level. If you are a super sentai fan and might have seen the 199 hero battle from the Gokaiger movie, this should be part of your collection.
