Finally someone is doing it. Valhalla Entertainment, a US production company behind AMC's Walking Dead series, will be developing the live-action feature film adaptation of the giant robot anime Gaiking together with Toei Animation and All Nippon Entertainment Works.
Valhalla recently revealed the initial plot of the said film:
a young man who is recruited to serve as the lead pilot for the Super Robot Gaiking. When Earth is threatened by an alien race intent on taking over the planet, he emerges as the only one who can pilot the massive robot. Together with his fellow co-pilots he must fight off the alien force in order to save mankind.
Toei has been planning the CG animation for Gaiking since 2010 and the pilot was unveiled during Tokyo International Anime Fair 2010. Check out the video below.
According to Toei Animation's Yoshi Ikezawa “Gaiking has long been one of the most beloved giant robot animation franchises with a global fan base”. Gaiking “marks a huge step forward in adapting one of the best Japanese [intellectual properties] for a global audience,” says Valhalla CEO, Gale Anne Hurd.
All Nippon Entertainment Works CEO Sandy Climan helped in bringing the collaboration and brought 80M as initial capitalization. While Hurd will be lead producer for movie, Ikezawa and Joseph Chou will also join in as producers from Toei. Climan, Tim Kwok, and Kozo Morishita of Toei are executive producing. Valhalla’s Director of Development Kris Henigman, Director will oversee development along with All Nipon’s VP of Creative Affairs Annmarie Bailey. Premier date will be announced soon.
