Fantastic Four is no more. I know this is not tokusatsu, but FF has influenced my childhood and a good excuse to read.
Marvel's first family of superheroes recently bids farewell to the youngest and explosive team member - Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch. In Fantastic Four #588, Ben and Johnny slug it out with the invading Negative Zone hordes. How did this happen? He accidentally let a band of Negative Zone bugs through the portal in Reed's lab, where they teleported into Blastaar's fortress and sabotaged his shields, effectively ending the civil war between him and Annihilus. Annihilus is now ready to begin the second great Annihilation Wave. Thus Torch's sacrificed himself in the process and to redeem himself from the incident.
According to an interview with IGN, writer Jonathan Hickman spoke with Tom Brevoort, Marvel Entertainment SVP of Publishing and narrated a vision - the evolution from the characters and concepts introduced to fans 50 years ago - this lead to the death of the Human Torch.
Why Johnny?
Ben (The Thing) just became the leader of the New Avengers, its too early for him to pass. Sue (Invisible Woman) already died once, it would be ridiculous if she would die twice...shame on her. Reed (Mister Fantastic) is another story.
From IGN: If Reed dies now, he'll have left a legacy behind in the form of the Future Foundation. And consider this – the series is ending after issue #588 next month, to be replaced by F.F. #1 in March. It could be that "F.F." is merely a placeholder acronym for the new series' real title. The series could be called "Fantastic Five" (following a recruitment drive) or "First Family", but we're betting that "Future Foundation" is the most likely option. So that means Reed is off the hook.
Besides he was Galactus' cohort before, so if Reed was about to die, he has the planet-eating monster to back him up.
